INTERPRETING AND TRANSLATION PROGRAMS

Consider a profession as a healthcare or legal interpreter or translator. The following are some locations throughout California where you can enroll in a program to obtain a certificate for interpreting and/or translating. It is by no means a complete list of interpreter programs in California.

While enrolling in a program and getting a certificate is an important step in the process to securing more work as an interpreter or translator, it is not the only step. Taking and passing an exam administered by one of the following agencies will increase your marketability and give you leverage over non-certified interpreters.

Being placed on one of the lists below will assist users of language services everywhere in locating and offering you assignments for interpreting or translating. By law, priority is given to certified and registered interpreters.

INTERPRETER AND TRANSLATOR REGISTRIES

PAY RANGE

As noted in the California Judicial Council Court Interpreters Program website, the half-day pay for contracted  state certified local interpreters is offered at a standard rate of 155.96; the whole-day rate is set at 282.23. Fees for certified medical interpreters are generally lower and fees for certified hearing and court interpreters for work in the private sector range from an average of $45.00 – $100.00 per hour.

Depending on the language, the rates for non-certified contracted interpreter rate is a range from $25.00 – $40.00 per hour. The market rates for in-person interpreting assignments vary from region to region and from one interpreter to another, even within the same language. There are many factors that influence rates. Important factors include experience, level of certification as well as supply and demand of interpreters.
